Shraavan Month – Immortality Month
Composed by Sage Markandeya
Everyone should perform during this Shraavan month
For Riddance from Illness, Obtain Good Health and Avoid Premature Death
Death is such a horrible word that mere mention of it sends shudders throughout the spine. However it is an eternal fact that everyone will die one day. Premature death of anyone causes a sad situation. This premature death may occur due to a fatal disease or an accident. There is only one way to avoid this – Mahamrityunjaya Sadhana. Only God Mahamrityunjaya Shiva has the power to save us from the clutches of Yamraaj, only He can grant a long life to His devotee-Sadhaks.
God Mahamrityunjaya Shiva has six arms. He holds the pot of divine elixir-nectar in His four arms. He bathes with nectar, drinks the elixir and makes His devotees immortal by granting them the nectar. His power consort is Bhagwati Amriteshwari. The literal meaning of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is that – O Lord Trayambak Shiva! May I obtain full strength and good health in my life, and may I attain complete growth-development in life while staying free from the bondages of life, and may my body remain healthy and disease-free during my entire life.
The ancient sages-ascetics have termed the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra as the heart of the Vedas. This Mantra has been accorded the highest place along with Gayatri Mantra among the various mantras used for meditation and peace.
The nature and expression of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra –
Om Triyambakam Yajaamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam |
Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaanmrityormuksheeya Maamritaata ||
Lord Shiva has been addressed as Triyambakam due to presence of three eyes symbolizing Sun, Moon and Fire. Yajaamahe is the process of dedicating the self towards Triyambakam Shiva through actions like Yagya etc. Lord Shiva is imbibed within Sugandhim as He grants His aromatic fragrant form to the life-giving elements while protecting from the deformities. The nurturing and wealth-enhancing expression of Lord Shiva is termed as Pushtikartaa or nurturer, and He is named Vardhanam due to promotion of growth, development and expansion. Mrityunjaya Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaat form grants protection from the diseases and death like bondages. The prayer to Mrityormuksheeya Maamritaata form is done to solicit protection from the three kinds of deaths leading to attainment of a single form from the immortality bestowing Shiva.
According to Maharishi Vashishtha, the 33 characters within the Triyambakam Mantra represent 33 Gods. These 33 Gods include 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Adityas, 1 Prajapati and 1 Shatkaar. The combined power-energy of these 33 Gods are imbibed within the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
