Interpretation of Guru – Shisya

Emotion – Cognizance
Confident… Indisputable… Courageous…
Guru is my faith,
And Guru is my trust.
When the feeling arises in your mind that whatever I am, I offer myself to you. I dedicate myself completely. This situation is the position of faith, this is the state to obtain Guru-Tatva and Guru-knowledge.
There is a beautiful legend, a certain king was fond of obtaining great enlightenment. He had a constant desire to learn new disciplines. Once his mind was filled with a desire to obtain complete knowledge of the Vedas. He told about this wish to his ministers, and ordered them to arrange accordingly. The ministers discussed and invited a learned scholar of Vedas from a neighboring kingdom and requested him to regularly impart knowledge to the king about the Vedas and other related scriptures.
The king also continued to obtain knowledge of the eternal Vedas from the acharyaji. The acharyaji instructed the king about the scripture verses, one by one, the king practiced them and understood the deeper details. The acharyaji was putting painstaking efforts, but the king was not getting complete education. One day, the king reflected – I am working so hard and the acharyaji, who is so wise, knowledgeable, qualified, ascetic person is also putting in thorough conscientious efforts, and yet I am not getting complete knowledge? This situation continued for a few days, and finally running out of patience one day, he put this question to the acharyaji.
O Guruvar! Pardon me, I am learning from you for many months, but I am not getting benefit? Why is that?
The acharya replied in a quiet tone – the reason is very simple.
The king requested – if the reason is so straightforward, then please explain to me in detail, I am concentrating my entire mind, but I am not getting education and knowledge?
The acharya advised – Rajan, this is a very minor fact, and the root cause is that you consider yourself “big” and are full of arrogance knowingly-unknowingly. You are great in stature and prestige, you are the king of this whole state, but you forgot an important fact while getting knowledge that – our relationship is one of Guru and disciple. This relationship is very significant and essential to obtain knowledge.
My position is higher than yours since I am your Guru, and your seat should be lower than mine; but till now you are seated on the high seat on the dais, sitting on the seat of the ego, so you are unable to obtain either knowledge or learning.
The day you become humble and get devoid of ego; and place me on a higher pedestal and study politely while seated in a lower position, you will certainly acquire knowledge, nothing will stop you from the path of learning.
The Guru continued – Rajan, always remember that one doesn’t master knowledge just by trusting in the capability of the Guru. When the pupil’s mind gets filled with faith and belief; only then he obtains total knowledge. You had a certain trust in me until now, you should now extend this trust to enter the sphere of faith and belief. Faith is the basis of all wisdom, of the entire self-knowledge.
Guru-disciple relationship –
Thousands and thousands of texts mention one essential fact about the Guru-disciple relationship that one cannot obtain knowledge without a Guru, and every seeker seeking knowledge and wisdom requires an enlightened Guru. So one becomes a disciple of a Guru.
If Guru is so important in the life, then some questions naturally arise –
- Does everyone have a separate Guru?
- Can every wise person be a Guru?
- Is it necessary for a Guru to have knowledge?
- How much trust should a sadhak have on his Guru?
- How much expectation and anticipation should a sadhak desire from his Guru?
- Should one have live expression towards his Guru?
- Should he have complete faith in his Guru?
There are two main questions here – first is “Trust” and the second question is “Faith”. Should one have Trust or Faith towards his Guru?
Generally, Trust and Faith appear alike but the fact is that there is a big difference between the two.
What is Trust?
Trust is a feeling within your mind through which you deal with multiple relationships with different individuals. Your relationships with your home-family, siblings, friends, relatives, friends, colleagues are all based on trust. Therefore it is said that all mutual relationships in the world are based on trust. So when you state that I trust so-so, then you have an inner desire that so-so will also act as per your wish and your thought.
The bond of trust is very weak because you have cast this bond as per your own attitude and feelings.
Before we discuss in detail about trust and faith-reliance, we should study their inner expressions. We can consider trust as an arrangement in which both parties, the one trusting and the other to be trusted, have a mutual interdependent relationship, and so both have few expectation as well as some responsibilities and duties. In such cases when one party deviates from its responsibility, then it breaks the trust of the other party. On the other hand, about the faith, we should understand that we believe that our wishes will surely get fulfilled; if we perform a certain prayer, worship, fasting or meditation, inspite of the fact that the other party has not presented itself or promised to do so. This faith becomes stronger if our desires get fulfilled, otherwise we scrutinize our efforts, polish them and try again with renewed vigor and alertness instead of fighting or quarreling with our deity or God. The essence is that we save ourselves by blaming others in Trust whereas we endeavor to progress by improving ourselves in Faith.
Now the question is that whether the Guru-disciple relationship, should be based on trust or faith. Should the disciple place unconstrained trust on Guru, and the Guru should also similarly have infinite trust on the disciple.
In my view, you cannot weigh the Guru-disciple relationship on the scales of trust. If you consider Guru as an object of trust, then realize that you have limited Him within the bounds of your thoughts. Trust is an emotional bind, where you get a little bit of mental satisfaction as per your belief, you get content for a little while. However, sometimes a odd situation may develop. If your expectations do not get fulfilled, then your trust wavers and starts diminishing bit by bit.
So what is the foundation above the trust, which strengthens the Guru-disciple relationship. This attribute is Faith-Conviction. The literal meaning of faith is –
- A belief of mind which contains hope and confidence.
- A belief of mind which satisfies you.
- A belief of mind which expects accomplishing of impossible looking tasks
Faith is a special quality of your inner mind and it does not depend on any visual scene, object, or place. When you state that you have faith on a certain person, on a particular place, on a particular deity, then you are simply saying that – irrespective of whether I get any benefits or not, I have full faith on you.
The trust is a feeling of outer mind and faith is a manifestation of the inner emotions. We do not need to force our mind to do this. A person’s mind can exist as a subject to faith. The mind has to perform according to the belief and faith.
Faith implies that, you have raised yourself above all types or likes or dislikes. The essence of faith is –
“Now I have offered all of my life unto your your hands.
Now the victory is upto you, and so is the defeat.”
i.e. I am no longer bothered about winning or losing. I am not worried about any result since I have full faith on you.
What is required for faith – One needs to first forego the existence of self, the personality of self, the “self” itself and own ego of “I” to build up the faith.
What is your personality?
You are a particular individual, you call yourself as “I”. This word is made up of a combination. What difficulties have you faced in your life, what challenges did you overcome, under what conditions did you live? All of these have contributed towards continuous development of your personality. The shocks and obstacles which you face in life, shape up your personality. It causes you to become a hard task-master, become angry, become arrogant or a humble person, become rich or become inflexible. The shocks and jolts which you receive in life, alters your thought-stream and this in turn molds up the alterations in your personality.
So your personality is a reflection of, whatever actions you have performed in your life, they manifest in your personality. This is the outer appearance of your personality, but there is an inner personality as well. You can comprehend and realize the Guru by diving into it. It is utter stupidity to try to understand and fathom your Guru though the external personality. You have received thousands of shocks, and you tried to comprehend Guru according to those blows and setbacks. This is a big mistake.
The Guru can and can only be comprehended through the inner personality.
Your external personality is covered with an environment of trusts and distrusts. Your outer personality decides, weighs measures according to whatever it perceives, sees and understands in the world. This causes misunderstandings in understanding and comprehending the Gurudev.
Your inner personality has a significant attribute beyond trust-distrust, and that particular element is – the ‘Faith‘.
One has to eliminate, to forget the own existence, the ego, to get to this Faith. The ego has to be broken in thousand pieces. One needs to destroy the self for some moments. Only then, the pitcher containing the nectar of faith and confidence opens up.
If you wish for the real presence, the actual manifestation of the Guru, then you will have to initiate the dedication process, forgetting about the self and outer personality. The dedication leads to the faith. This commitment does not differentiate between good or bad, it first causes the person to forget about the self. So dedication has been called as the entrance door to the faith.
You perform prayer-worship, meditation,sadhna, or chanting-spirituality, and when you state that you do so out of trust, then you are not actually performing this prayer-worship, sadhna or meditation. Because the steps of trust are always filled with some expectations of give-and-take. You hope that I will get something by performing this activity, and when your expectations do not materialize, then your trust starts converting into doubt and that doubt slowly turns into distrust and disbelief.
But the day you start doing prayer-worship, meditation,sadhna, or chanting-spirituality with full faith, then you dedicate yourself to Guru with complete inner love. Then you offer yourself to your God, your Guru. Then a feeling enters your mind that Whatever I am, I offer myself unto you. I dedicate myself completely unto you. This situation is the position of faith, this is the position to achieve Guru-knowledge, and the Guru-tatva elements. mentor elements, and master the knowledge to achieve the status.
What is the essence of your personality and your life? The hard truth is that – your life is just only a repository of experiences. The accumulation of new experiences in this life have shaped and developed that evolution of your intelligence, your consciousness, and your thought-process. Now how can anything new be taught in such a situation? If you wish to learn only from repeated experiences, from the events of the past, from the experiences, from your thoughts, then you cannot learn anything. You cannot become a disciple. You will have to think afresh, by forgetting and eliminating you old thoughts, old shocks and jolts, old mundane experiences; to become a disciple.
This thought and meditation is called faith. Trust is interaction within the external society and faith is the initiation of a new sense internally, deep inside the inner space.
It is essential to setup Guru into the inner space –
When you talk of faith, it simply means you have to open yourself to let Guru come in. You will need to open yourself completely for this. Only then can Guru-element and Guru-sense enter you, and Guru can be setup as energy within you.
Anything can happen in this situation because you have surrounded your psyche within large walls, you have not received results as per your hopes and expectations multiple times, you have received injuries from shocks and blows, and this has filled you with fear, and therefore you do not let anyone enter your mind. You are afraid to even setup Guru within your mind.
But when the situation becomes more favorable, and your feelings become more sensitive, and you move beyond trust, then the sense of dedication may arise within you, and therefore Full dedication is a pre-requisite for Faith and the day when you realize that I have full confidence on Gurudev then that means that you have broken away all the walls of fear and distrust within your mind, and that you have offered yourself completely to Gurudev.
What happens after you offer yourself? Guru will not act as per your wishes and hopes. Guru will act within you as per His power and His energy. Faith will cause the will-power of Guru to flow through each vein and nerve.
Faith and your energy –
The relationship between Guru and disciple is an energetic connection. Your experience is based on a normal surface. Now it needs to be elevated to the highest ground. As more energy is required to climb up the stairs, similarly to take your psyche to a higher level, a special swift power is required. The personality of this special energy force is termed as the Guru.
The Guru touches your innermost senses of personality, which no one has been able to touch until now, and this touch is only possible when you rise above the sense of trust into the deep expression on faith. To achieve this, a big jump, with major efforts is required; and you cannot make those tries on the basis of your limited experiences. You can only obtain trust through your experiences till-date. A big jump is needed from this trust through your inner personality. A new pious relationship needs to be built up. The whole quantum of energy has to be used. So it is important that if you wish to dive into your joy, deeply dive into this vast ocean of joy, then a big jump with all your efforts is required, and such a strong jump is possible only with full faith.
Why have Faith-Confidence only in the Guru?
There are two states of developing faith in Guru – In the first state you start changing in the presence of Guru, while close with Guru. You lose yourself for a few moments. You get into the blissful realms of joy. You dive within yourself.
The second state involves development of deeper scenarios. You become nonchalant, you become carefree, you completely abandon the idea of thinking about the results. When such thoughts start occurring, then it means that you have emotionally dedicated yourself to the Gurudev. Your body is physically working, you are doing your job or your business, progressing in this society, looking after the family, but inspite of all this, you are detached, you are content.
The body will remain same externally, but the pace of mind with alter. The dedication initiates an inner transformation within you. In the first case, you visualize Guru as a particular face, a particular body, with the expression of various emotions, sense and thoughts; but as you progress deeper into the joys of faith through dedication, you start considering the mental presence of Guru as the basic foundation. Then you completely merge yourself with the Guru for a longer duration to transform yourself.
So the Guru is not an instrument of mere trust, He is not a mere source of information, He is not a mere expression of intellectual knowledge; rather He is a nector urn of deep faith. You need to make a strong jump for this. Then you can acquire a new birth, breaking free from all the ties and get filled with new novel energy.
You only need to merge your mental depths with Gurudev, Guru is not merely trust, He is the expression of Faith and Confidence.
Your own Guru, your own faith, your own belief, your own joy, everything is yours … just! You need to merge ….
