Brahma Varchasva Shishyabhishek Deeksha
The act by which the disciple moves towards spiritual and material enlightenment
Once a disciple asked Sad Gurudev Nikhil, “I have achieved phenomenal success in my life, still I am not contented. Happiness continues to elude me! Why so?”
Sad Gurudev Nikhil was intrigued. He probed, “How do you define success my dear son? What have you achieved in your life? Tell me.”
The disciple answered –
“I enjoy good health.
I am affluent and am doing well professionally.
10-12 people report to me.
My family life is blissful.
I have received state recognition.
I have traveled far and wide.
I have a pleasing personality.”
If I assess my life, I have been successful on conventional parameters. Yet, happiness is away from me.
Sad Gurudev Nikhil responded, Son! What you have achieved is nothing new. Many people do it, but the vacuum in your heart comes from the fact that your life lacks spiritual success.
Until, we merge spiritual and material success, life will lose meaning and perspective and the feeling of incompleteness will continue to haunt you.
The disciple was a bit confused. He requested Sad Gurudev Nikhil to explain in detail.
Sad Gurudev Nikhil elaborated –
There are 16 stages of material success and there are 16 stages of spiritual success and in life you have to fuse both these elements of success, only then happiness will flow in your life.
The 16 stages of material & spiritual accomplishments are –
|Material Accomplishments||Spiritual Accomplishments|
|1. Good health||Peace of mind|
|2. Ancestral wealth||Contentment|
|3. Graceful looks||Meditation|
|4. Masculine vigour||Surrendering to the Guru|
|6. Heir (Son)||Enthusiasm|
|7. Education||Thoughtless mind|
|8. Subduing Enemies||Absolute surrender to the Guru|
|10. Happy conjugal life||Success in sadhanas|
|11. A long life||Awakening of the Kundalini|
|12. Fortune||Enlightenment of super consciousness|
|13. State recognition||Witnessing God in its Absolute manifestation|
|14. Abundant income||Travelling at the pace of mind|
|15. Success as desired||Reaching Self enlightenment|
|16. Authority||Going to Siddhashrama|
Against each stage of material success, corresponds a stage of spiritual success. Until both converge, the life will remain incomplete. Happiness may come in spurts but absolute joy will continue to elude you. If you introspect your life, you would realise that your life is empty in terms of spiritual progress. You have equated success with material progress. Therefore, you feel incomplete. To establish your supremacy in your life you should also aspire to reach Siddhashram.
What meets the eye is finite and what does not is infinite
This world is a material world and there is extreme emphasis on achieving these 16-stages of success. However, these stages of success will not make you whole. Joy will continue to elude you until you will start progressing spiritually. Life becomes complete when both spiritual and material successes fuse, but for most of us life has lost meaning because we are concentrating only on material growth. Spiritual advancement has been relegated to the background. Consequently, we are alienated from the fundamental direction of life which Upanishdas have spoken time and again.
The touch of immortality
It is to move towards immortality. Paradoxical, isn’t it? Since the time, we are born we are inching towards death because the time is finite. We are racing against time in a bid to establish our supremacy or authority on others. This is what is driving most of us.
So lost are we in this mad rush that we forget, “Charity begins at home.” Before we establish our supremacy on anyone else, we need to exercise authority on ourselves. We have to reach a stage where the body and the mind start functioning for the sake of soul, the divine light that shines bright in all of us.
Once, we have established our authority on ourselves, we cease to get ruffled by the cyclic occurrence of happy and sad events in our lives. The realization dawns that life is above and beyond these moments and equanimity dawns in such enlightened souls.
How self control can lead to enlightenment?
Self-control is the domain of enlightenment. As long as you will keep running after material signs of success, there will be something lacking in your life. You will become trapped in the rat race and your soul will continue to hanker for spiritual growth. And if you neglect material aspect of life, there will be again an imbalance in your personality.
Life is meant to be lived. Completely. For this you need to connect with your soul, where the Supreme Being resides. This Supreme Being is the reservoir of wisdom and it banishes ignorance. It knows the ephemeral nature of human life and is keen to move beyond death.
Death and fear coincide and the day you move beyond fear, you have conquered death. You are moving towards tasting that divine nectar where the impermanence of life ceases to affect, because life is just a stop-over for the soul. The immortal soul is a reflection of divinity in all of us. Connecting with that soul and making it paramount is the crux of the spiritual progress.
Materialistically, we move outward and spiritually, we move inward. Until, we start peeling our layers of personality and uncovering our real self, we cannot access the soul-the centre of unbridled joy.
How to bring joy in your life?
Material acquisitions will bring happiness and spiritual growth will bring joy. The difference is that happiness relies on objects. As long as you keep acquiring them, it stays with you, but it is transient. Soon, happiness will wear out and you will start looking for another acquisition to experience it once again.
On the contrary joy springs from the soul. It is bliss – child-like. You can remain joyful for no reason and it radiates in you. Joy envelops you and it surrounds you. It eats that feeling of sadness, incompleteness that you get even after acquiring material symbols of success.
Surrender to the enlightened Guru. Unless you surrender to the Guru, your life will be an experiment. At times you will succeed in those experiments and at times you will not. What is a bigger worry that when failures will touch you, you will lose your enthusiasm? This is a bigger loss than failure because you are no longer connected to your soul, the source of joy.
Know thy Guru: the source of supreme power
The Guru is an awakened soul. He knows his real self, whereas you don’t. When you surrender to the Guru, you merge with Him – the enlightened soul. Naturally, you also become enlightened. You discover your inner strength, your supreme power and elements of spiritual success like mental peace, contentment and self-supremacy manifest.
For a disciple, the Guru is the manifestation of the Supreme Being. This is the truth and the disciples who allow this truth to seep in their being start achieving spiritual and material success quickly. In Guru deities converge and Supreme being resides. Once you have surrendered to the Guru, the rest will fall in place, sooner or latter because now you are not travelling alone in the life. There is a savior with you. He is your Guru and come what may, the Guru is not going to leave you in lurch.
Therefore, Shankaracharya found it difficult to explain Guru.
In this whole world, there is no force or power equivalent to the Guru. The alchemy of Guru transforms you totally and you are reborn, when He takes in you in his wings. That’s the reason the Guru is addressed as the Brahma, the creator. The Guru guides you to the path of fulfillment where the disciple becomes Guru-like and his life successes flow unhindered and joy blossoms in his heart.
Knowing thyself is knowing the supreme authority
How do you define yourself? You are the outward trappings that the world gave you or you are something distinct and different from those. Your identity extends beyond the body. It goes deep inside your soul, where the supreme power resides. You are the soul. The moment soul makes a move the body perishes. Nothing remains and all the trappings that you have guarded with so much effort bite the dust.
You are the supreme being. This is the ultimate realization and your true identity.
Think about it, you are different from others and in you resides your soul, the ultimate light that guides you in all difficult moments of life. In fact, the whole point of your existence is to become ‘soul-ful’ and when you relate to others you communicate to the soul of another person.
Transcending the superficiality of a relationship and delving deep into the soulful existence is the purpose of life which can happen only when you are in touch with your real self. You need to recognise yourself, who is an abundant source of energy. The bigger question is where does this energy come from? It comes from the soul, the centre of your supreme being, the core of your being. When you surrender to the Guru you begin to flower spiritually and materialistically. But, the aim of your life changes, it is to reach Siddhashrama, the abode of awakened and enlightened souls in this lifetime.
When Guru touches your Ajna Chakra, his electrifies the nerves which harness the energy from your Mooladhara to Saharasara. The downward travel of energy is procreation and the upward travel of the energy is enlightenment. As long as energy is centered in the Muladhara, you are focused on materialism. In a way it is good but too much of focus on it will blind your ambitions. Life is about learning the fine art of balancing attachment and detachment and for the upward flow of the energy you need to become a bit detached and focus on spiritual progress.
Are you thirsty enough for the Guru?
Sad Guru seeks disciples and disciples seek the Sad Guru. They are inseparable when they meet, because they are two sides of the same coin. Here, the coin refers to the soul. Their relationship transcends lives and is beyond petty motives. The moment the word is Guru is spoken and the disciple’s heart fills with joy then at least some spiritual progress has been made by the disciple.
There is a terrible urge to see each other and the disciple feels like an orphan as long as the Guru doesn’t take him in His wings.
Sad Guru is dedicated towards the welfare of the disciples and His magnetism attracts the disciples. It is like a soulful connection and when the twain meet agony disappears and only abundant joy remains.
The fusion of spiritual and material supremacy!
Such is life that end justifies the means. Therefore, blinded by greed and ambition we get lost in the material acquisitions. In spite of all these successes, when sadness envelops us we start to look beyond the obvious. There is something that material growth fails to fulfill. This thought is a moment of divide and motivates us to delve deep inside – the seat of the soul – because happiness can be bought but joy is beyond money. It is the nature of the soul to remain joyful.
At this point, the seeker realizes that life is a beautiful journey where spirituality and materialism should co-exist, not compete. Only when these two shores will meet, the supremacy of the soul will be established. Until you nurture your soul, it will be a lifeless existence. Living will elude you because you are in this world for the soul. The soul is the master and if the body is not in tune with the master there will be a dis-connect just like if you water the leaves and not the roots, the tree is not going to blossom.
The Guru is the authority who makes you aware of your soulful existence. He has answers to all your doubts that have stolen your peace, but you need to be a seeker. A seeker is someone who has dropped his egos. He is without ambitions and for him Guru is the destination of his life. When you become a seeker the wisdom of Guru will flower in your soul. Your desires will manifest because in universe, what you ask, you receive.
