कृष्ण, बलराम और राक्षस (Krishna, Balram and the Monster)
Krishna, Balram and the monster
How did it got tiny?
This is a story from the Mahabharata days. Once Krishna and Balram were passing through a dense forest. A lot of time had passed and now the sun was due to get set. It was not possible to proceed ahead in the dark, and so Krishna said – Balram, let us stay at this place until tomorrow morning, we will continue towards our destination at the dawn.
Balram replied – But this dense forest could be dangerous, it will not be safe to sleep, we will have to stay awake the entire night.
Krishna suggested – Well, let us do the following, first I shall sleep and you can keep watch and when you feel sleepy, you wake me up; then I shall stand guard while you sleep.
Balram agreed, and within a few moments Krishna got into a deep sleep, and then Balram noticed a terrible figure coming near him, this seemed to be a huge monster.
The monster shouted upon seeing them and Balram got badly scared. This incident had a bizarre effect. Balram’s size shrunk a little due to fear, while the monster grew bigger.
Then the monster screamed again and Balram got another terrible fright, now Balram shrank again while the monster grew more bigger.
The monster started to gradually approach Balram, Balram was already afraid, and seeing that huge monster coming towards him, screamed – Krishna, and fainted.
Krishna got up on hearing Balram’s sound, and noticing Balram thought that Balram had gotten tired and fell asleep; and hollered to him before getting into sleep.
Now Krishna started to watch and guard.
After some time, the same monster came near him and shouted loudly. Krishna did not feel any fear and calmly asked him, why are you shouting like this, what do you need?
Something bizarre again occurred. Krishna’s size enhanced due to his courage, and the monster got shrunk. This was the first time that the monster had encountered someone who wasn’t afraid of him. He got nervous and shouted again.
This time again, Krishna did not get afraid, and as a result, his size grew larger, while the monster shrank once more.
As a last resort, the monster again shouted with his full strength, Krishna smiled, and again asked him, tell me what do you need? Suddenly the monster shrunk into a tiny diminutive form and Krishna taking him in his palms, tied him in his dhoti.
It broke into a dawn after sometime, Krishna woke up Balram and asked him to proceed ahead. They gradually began to move ahead, when Balram excitedly told him – Do you know, what happened last night? A horrible monster had come to kill us.
Wait-wait, Krishna interrupted Balram’s mid-sentence, and taking out the monster tied into his dhoti, showed him to Balram and asked, are you talking about this?
Yes, about this one. But yesterday when I saw him, he was so huge, how did it shrink into this small size? Balram asked incredibly.
Krishna stated – When you try to escape from any challenge in your life which you ought to face, then that challenge magnifies and starts to control you, but when you confront that challenge, which you ought to face; then you grow bigger than the challenge and start to control it.
In reality, these monsters are the challenges which come in our life. When we encounter obstacles, tough situations, and problems in life, and if we try to leave those tough situations to fate or to Providence; or try to avoid them; then these problems grow manifold and ultimately start to control our lives, however when we tackle these situations, then these issues shrink gradually and eventually we overpower them. So whenever you get any such problems in your life, you should face those problems.
Do not flee away from these problems, face them. If you try to avoid those problems or leave them to fate, then these problems will slowly grow so large and ghastly that you will lose control over your life in that tangle. And as soon as you tackle these problems, they will diminish and grow so small that you will be able to easily control them and eliminate them for ever.
